Within the TR172, IGMK together with the collaboration partners (Leipzig University and University of Bremen, TROPOS and Alfred Wegener Institute) aim to better observe, understand, and simulate processes leading to the current drastic climate changes in the Arctic.

Terms of employment
The postdoc position (100% TV-L E13) is awarded until the end of the funding period, i.e., December 2027. Qualification requirements
The postdoctoral researcher / research software engineer should hold a PhD in meteorology, mathematics, computer science or related fields, have a strong experience in atmospheric modelling, knowledge of arctic meteorology and an advanced state-of-the-art programming knowledge (fortran, unix system, HPC). Furthermore, we expect a high interest to support project scientists with simulation handling and to participate in project meetings, the ability to work in a team as well as independently and very good communication skills in written and spoken English.

Terms of employment
The PhD positions (75% TV-L E13) are awarded for 3 years with possible extension to up to four years. Qualification requirements
For the PhD position (A) we expect an M.Sc. in Meteorology, Phsyics, Mathemathics or a related field, a highly motivated person with strong interest in Arctic clouds, mathematical modelling and analysis of cloud processes, experience in scientific programming and Linux / Unix operating systems, a high willingness to collaborate with scientists in- and outside of TR172 and to establish new scientific cooperations, the ability to work in teams as well as independently, and excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.

The PhD researcher (B) should hold a M.Sc. in Meteorology or a related field, have convincing and demonstrable knowledge/experience in atmospheric remote sensing, have an advanced programming experience with state-of-the-art UNIX or LINUX operating systems, a high willingness to collaborate with scientists in- and outside of TR172 and to establish new scientific cooperations, the ability to work in a team as well as independently, very good communication skills in written and spoken English.

Terms of employment
The PhD positions (A) – (G) (75% TV-L E13) are awarded for 3 years with possible extension to up to four years. Qualification requirements
For the PhD positions (A) – (G) we expect strong interest in atmospheric science, in particular in cloud physics, remote sensing, radiative transfer, and climate dynamics. Applicants should have a Master in Meteorology or a related field. Experience in high-level scientific programming for data analysis is desirable. Experience in cloud, aerosol, and/or radiation physics and atmospheric modeling would be advantageous for positions (C) – (G) , and scientific programming (Fortran, python) as well as experience with Unix/Linux is required for these positions. Candidates must possess excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
The scientific programmer position (H) should have a completed M.Sc. degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Climate Physics, Environmental Science or a related discipline, keen interest in understanding processes that lead to extremes, very good analytical, quantitative, and programming skills (e.g. Python), experience with climate data (netcdf), with statistics, machine learning and causal inference are desirable. Candidates should have very good English skills, both written and spoken.

PhD Position (m, f, d) on the Satellite-based Characterization of Cloud Evolution in Arctic Cold Air Outbreaks
The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) is an internationally renowned research institute in the field of aerosol and cloud research, and a member of the Leibniz Association. Its remote sensing department is offering a 4-year PhD position within the transregional collaborative research center TR172: Arctic Amplification, Climate relevant Atmospheric and SurfaCe Processes and Feedback Mechanisms (AC)³. The planned work shall be carried out in close collaboration with national project partners and in particular the
Universities of Leipzig and Cologne.

The PhD student (m, f, d) will carry out the following tasks:

  • Characterization of cloud properties, structure and evolution including their radiative effects during Arctic Cold Air Outbreaks (CAO) with satellite observations and other complementary data sources
  • Comparison of operational satellite products with observations data collected from aircraft during field campaign for CAO
  • Long-term analysis of satellite products and reanalysis datasets to investigate natural variability and potential trends in the occurrence frequency and strength of CAO as reflected in the associated cloud properties and radiative effects

We are looking for an excellent scientist with a University degree in Meteorology or a related subject such as Physics, Mathematics or Geosciences. Prior experience in analyzing large-volume observational data and with programming in Python or similar computer languages are highly desirable. Fluency in English and the ability to clearly present research results both in spoken and written form are also essential.
